Best FREE VPN Service 2020
Lets start with the best FREE VPN to use. We strongly advise against using a free VPN for different reasons.
Many free VPN services sell your bandwidth, share your data, do not offer 0 logs, and in some cases are more insecure than actually not using a VPN.
3 Reasons to avoid using a Free VPN in 2020
Watch this video by LeeTV which explains why you should avoid using most Free VPNs
As you can see from the video, sometimes, it just isn't worth using a Free VPN, unless it is from a trusted service, like the well known online privacy company - ProtonVPN (Owners or ProtonMail - the secure and FREE encrypted email service).
If you are looking for a VPN to use for FREE, we recommend paying a little extra, and committing to a secure, premium service, which is built around privacy. The video above explains in more detail.
What is the BEST FREE VPN Service in 2020?
The best free VPN service to use in 2020 is ProtonVPN.
ProtonVPN is considered the best free VPN for many reasons, such as; no logs policy, fast and worldwide dedicated servers, and high privacy laws based in Switzerland.
There are many free VPN's that are available on the PlayStore/App Market, but we strongly advise against them. Stick with a provider that is well known, and who own their own servers.
The first subscription tier of ProtonVPN is its free offering, which includes just three VPN server locations, and only allows one device to be connected at a time. You'll also have to create an account with ProtonVPN in order to access even its free tier. Despite those limitations, ProtonVPN is unique in that it does not limit the amount of data a free subscriber can use, as mentioned earlier.
TunnelBear VPN's free offering limits you to 500MB of secured traffic per month and AnchorFree Hotspot Shield limits your bandwidth to 500MB per day.
Other free VPNs pile on other restrictions. Because of all that, I recommend ProtonVPN over all the other free VPNs I've tested, and the reason why I believe ProtonVPN is the best FREE VPN to use in 2020.
The second tier is ProtonVPN Basic, which costs $5 per month ($48 annually). This tier grants access to all the VPN locations ProtonVPN has to offer, but limits you to just two devices. P2P file sharing is also allowed at this tier.
ProtonVPN and Netflix
Some websites and streaming services may not function properly while you're connected via VPN.
This could be down to unusual traffic, which can trigger security measures on a site. In the case of Netflix, it's because different content is available in different countries. That's why it can be so hard to watch Netflix with a VPN.
The good news is, that wasn't a problem when I tested Netflix with ProtonVPN. Netflix loaded up just fine while I was connected to a US-based ProtonVPN server, and that was without even resorting to the specific streaming servers.
From the settings menu you can adjust how and when the app starts up and connects. Note that ProtonVPN does include a Kill Switch that halts web traffic on your machine should the VPN link become disconnected. That prevents your traffic from being exposed, even if only briefly.
Ideally, a VPN will not leak information about your ISP, your true IP address, or your DNS requests. In my testing with the DNS Leak Test tool, I found that all such information was obscured with ProtonVPN.
Does ProtonVPN Get Faster if You Pay More?
ProtonVPN is unique in that it makes more servers available at higher pricing tiers. It also has a limited free option, and Core Servers, all of which have an impact on speed. Because I am nothing if not thorough, I re-ran my tests to compare the various means of connecting via ProtonVPN. My results are shown in the charts below. The rightmost result is from when I performed my initial speed tests along with all the other VPNs. The results to the immediate right of that were the result of using the Fastest profile to select a server. In all other cases, I manually selected what I believed to be the best server.
There are a couple of conclusions that I can draw from this. First and foremost, it demonstrates that the eccentricities of the VPN server you use have an enormous impact on performance. It also shows that while conventional wisdom would dictate that a limited number of servers and a large user base would result in worse performance is not necessarily true. It's also not necessarily true that paying to get access to more servers with lower load per-server will yield better performance. Lastly, while the Core Servers will increase your latency like nobody's business, the impact on performance is not necessarily catastrophic.
ProtonVPN on Other Platforms
ProtonVPN offers clients for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. The company provides detailed instructions on how to configure a Linux machine to use the service. ProtonVPN deserves credit for delivering an excellent and consistent experience across all platforms.
The company does not provide clients for streaming devices, which several VPN companies now do. It also doesn't offer pre-configured routers for sale, to protect all the devices on your network, but it does supply instructions for configuring many router brands.
Smart and Flexible
At first blush, ProtonVPN's restrictively tiered pricing plans might seem a bit off-putting, but those tiers do provide price flexibility. We've also seen compelling evidence that using the lower-tiered plans doesn't necessarily result in poor performance. The company also offers a rare, truly free experience that doesn't limit your bandwidth or push ads. ProtonVPN has staked its reputation as a privacy-focused company, which is a refreshing change after seeing so many other VPNs emphasize speed and video streaming. It also has a remarkably good-looking client, which is not something every VPN can claim. All that, coupled with the company's focus on technological excellence, is a powerful combination.
When we first reviewed ProtonVPN, it was a young service looking to expand. It certainly has done that, and the service is definitely better now. It's still unclear if the company will be able to scale up to match its competitors, given its exacting standards for physical security. But that's a worry for the future. Right now, ProtonVPN is an excellent service at an unbeatable range of prices. If you're dipping your toe into VPNs, you can't go wrong with ProtonVPN. It's an Editors' Choice winner along with NordVPN, Private Internet Access, and TunnelBear. Each of these excels in its own way: NordVPN has a robust global network, TunnelBear VPN is friendly and approachable, and Private Internet Access offers an affordable choice without sacrificing quality.
